Mentoring Program

Bid the older women to be reverent and devout in their deportment as becomes those engaged in sacred service, not slanderers or slaves to drink. They are to give good counsel and be teachers of what is right and noble. Titus 2:3

WOHAD, TLC, Inc. partners with Hauke Academic Alternative School in the Conroe Independent School District providing mentoring services to pregnant/parenting teenage girls. Originally named Operation Involvement, the school was created in 1975 to address the academic needs of students with challenging disciplinary issues. As the school grew in size, the focus moved from behavioral concerns to those at risk of dropping out of school due to academic problems, learning disabilities, pregnancy, family or socioeconomic issues.

In 1986, the school's name was changed to W.L. Hauke Academic Alternative School in honor of its principal, Larry Hauke who died suddenly while serving as its leader. Currently, its principal Jo Ann Beken carries the baton to assure its mission of "being a place where hopes and dreams come true" are fulfilled. As a mean to improve academic achievement for this high risk population, the school provides credit recovery classes, vocational adjustment classes, parenting classes, and a class specific for pregnant girls below ninth grade who decide not to stay at their home campus during pregnancy. Hauke serves 167 enrolled students, grades 8-12 for which one hundred per cent are identified as crictically at risk but do not exhibit significant behavior problems.

In 2010, Janice Freel, Founder/President of WOHAD, TLC, Inc. began the mentoring program for girls at Hauke. As the school's first female mentor, Janice readily established rapport and gained respect of staff and students. Ms. Freel provides guidance and support in topics ranging from career development, character building, pregnancy and re-enforces parenting education. As a team, we strive to help students discover their full potential and actively engage all resources to help them fulfill their academic goals while facing challenges of an unplanned pregnancy.

You can become involved in this mutually rewarding program by volunteering and/or donating money, baby clothes, furnitures and supplies to help our young mothers complete their education through this transitional stage of life.

Community Outreach: Hands of Mercy

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Matthew 5: 7

WOHAD,TLC,Inc. extends its hands of mercy to children of incarcerated parents through the establishment of ongoing collaborative support  with community organizations, private corporations and generous individual donors in providing clothing, toys and help meet age appropriate basic physical needs.

Children of incarcerated parents suffer serious disruption in living situation, particularly when separated from their mother. When fathers go to prison, most often children remain with their mother as primary caregiver. However, when mothers go to prison a small percentage, estimated as 25% live with their father.  Consequently, children most often are placed in the custody of grandmother or foster care as current caregiver. As the rate of maternal incarceration increases the number of children affected by the incarceration increases.

Through this structured support system, WOHAD will accomplish its goals :

1. Minimize the tax burden of tax-paying citizens.

2. Minimize the cost of childcare imposed on care providers.

Community Support: Anger Management Class

Bear one another's burden, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2

Wohad partners with Dempsie Henley Unit, TDCJ, Dayton, TX, offering a nine weeks anger management class to state jail women.  This volunteer initiative affords an opportunity to connect with women serving sentence for non-violent offenses as petty theft, drugs, and property offenses.  Some offenders are ordered by the court to take the class, while others recognize a need to gain control of their impulsivity and learn effective individual coping skills.

The course is based on Biblical principles in managing and healthy expression of anger. Essential to learning is an understanding that anger is a part of being human.  It's a natural human emotion which we all experience. An average class attendance is fifteen (15).
