The Need

Despite the encouraging news of a decline in teen pregnancy and birth rates, the United States still have the highest teen childbearing rates above other industrialized countries. The most challenging among this population are subsequent births to teens who are already parents.

In addition to being pregnant, teen mothers face a myriad of social and economical problems. They encounter the risk of dropping out of school, experience unemployment, poverty and sexually transmitted diseases.

Teen mothers pay a high cost for the poor choices they make and society pays a greater price. It costs taxpayers approximately $7 billion annually in direct costs associated with medical care, public assistance, child care and foster care.
